Based in Taipei, he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre at National Taiwan University and serves as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Taipei. Holding a Master's degree in Theatre from NTU, his work explores magic as a conceptual and performative language that transcends spectacle. His theatre solo works interweave illusion design, narrative structure, and personal memory, using magic to challenge stereotypes and evoke poetic reflections on reality. Lin extends magic beyond traditional theatre—into streets, alternative venues, and screen-based media—investigating the uncanny as both a visual and psychological trigger. His creations emphasize the architecture of storytelling, where magic drives dramatic rhythm and deepens meaning. Lin’s research and creations have been supported by Taiwan several major institutions including the: 2018 Cloud Gate Wanderer Fellowship 2019 National Theatre and Concert Hall Art Base Residency 2022 NTCH Ideas Lab Selected Artist 2023 FACP Members' Choice Award 2024 " Outstanding Production of the Year" award by Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre 2024 National Culture and Arts Foundation Overseas Arts Travel Fellowship 2025 NCAF Young Stars New Vision Artist 2025 Delegate of the Taiwan Season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025 Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative Fellowship Recent works include: Misdirected , Dazed and Confused, Role Play , and Birthday Party —each reflecting Lin’s ongoing inquiry into illusion, vulnerability, and the blurred lines between performer and persona.

The Magic of Blooming Flower Fields by Shu-Kai Yang 8 Feburary 2024 Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Annual Program Selection Observer Guling Street Theatre Cultural Newsletter If there truly exists a 'magic that blooms into fields of flowers' in this world, it must be the effect brought by performing arts. Dazed and Confused, as an autobiographical work, blends Lin Lu-chieh’s background as both a magician and theatre practitioner. Magic and theatre, in essence, are the same—using techniques that create something from nothing to sincerely narrate stories where truth and illusion blur, captivating audiences in a fleeting moment of brilliance. In less than an hour, the creator condenses their coming-of-age experiences into a delicate, heartfelt story, weaving small or grand surprises at every life turning point. With a light and humorous touch, these memories of varying warmth connect, inviting audiences into the creator’s world while making time feel tangible and clear in that moment. by CHIH-YUAN CHENG The audience’s 'pretend' worry for the staged situations (despite knowing it’s a magic trick) is a highly sophisticated and mature theatrical technique that skillfully draws viewers back into the live experience. In terms of narrative, these techniques are honed through the pursuit of childhood imagery, tracing back to explore 'who I am' and, more preciously, decisively declaring 'what I am not.' The roads not taken are delicately transformed into charming, knowing surprises at our feet. In an era where anxiety and distraction are the default mindset for audiences, Dazed and Confused is one of the rare works that allows people to purely focus on the joy of the moment for an entire evening—highly effective and truly Brilliant!

Revealing Secrets: Reflections on Self-Expression in Craft through Lu Production’s Dazed and Confused by seah Yi-zai 8 Feburary 2024 Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Annual Program Selection Observer Guling Street Theatre Cultural Newsletter A magician is an actor playing the role of a magician" — this famous quote from Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, the father of modern magic, not only underscores that magic is not sorcery but the skilled execution of techniques, but also highlights the distinction between a magician’s real identity and their stage persona in the art of magic. As an actor or performer, their life inevitably oscillates between the stage and offstage, the spotlight and the shadows. In Dazed and Confused , created in collaboration with director Cheng-chun Lee, Lin presents yet another solo performance, refining several earlier versions by weaving together personal life experiences and his journey as a magician. The concept of how a magician engages in "role-playing" has been explored extensively in Lin’s previous works, with Role Play elevating this idea to a question of "manipulation" through the narrative of Chung-Ling Soo. 2022 Role Play at NTCH Experimental Theater In recent years, many performers in dance, circus, and other skill-based arts have begun to "speak out" and express themselves, giving rise to a trend of "autobiographical" theater among such artists. However, when magicians, as fellow skill-based performers, begin to engage in self-expression, they encounter a more complex set of theatrical challenges. 2022 Role Play at NTCH Experimental Theater In a theatrical space that relies on constructing illusions and maintaining the fourth wall, the audience’s trust is the final line of defense in the performer-audience relationship. Magic, which demands a high degree of trust from its audience, cannot presuppose its own "falseness" — for magic hinges entirely on the absolute condition of making people believe. Thus, when a magician in a magic theater begins to speak lines or share narratives about their "true" origins beyond the magic performance itself, the audience’s trust must navigate a dual axis: the magic performance and the magician’s self-expression. 2024 Dazed and Confused at Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Yet, despite the emphasis on "magic creating reality" and "earning audience trust," magic remains an art of "concealment." In other words, the truth and mystery of magic must remain an enigma, not easily unraveled. However, when a magician begins to self-express, the act of revealing their personal history transforms into a further "authentication" of theatrical belief. This duality persists: while magic seeks to create reality and secure trust, its essence lies in hiding. When a magician discloses their personal story, this act of revelation becomes a theatrical device to strengthen "authenticity." Renowned close-up card magician Richard Turner, blind since childhood, spent his life refusing to acknowledge his visual impairment. Through intense self-discipline, he lived as if he were sighted, eschewing a white cane or guide dog. Yet, at the age of 60, in 2014, he decided to create a new solo performance, Pasteboard Warrior. This marked the first time in his half-century career that he openly shared his personal background and reflections on magic, publicly acknowledging his identity as a blind person. 2024 Dazed and Confused at Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Such self-disclosure of personal struggles and vulnerabilities transforms the revelation of secrets into a theatrical sleight-of-hand, reinforcing "authenticity" and "trust." While magic extracts trust from the audience through its performance, the magician’s self-expressive performance further elicits empathy, emotion, and affection. Of course, a magician’s self-expression does not imply that their life experiences or emotions are "acted" out. Rather, through the logic of theater and magic, the magician’s narrative of self-expression inevitably pushes the question of theatrical authenticity to a more complex level. This makes Lu-Chieh Lin’s development of narrative-driven magic theater a compelling advantage worthy of continued attention.

Role Play MY MAGIC IS REAL WRITTEN & PERFORMED BY LIN LU-CHIEH © 張震洲 The story took place in London at the dawn of the twentieth century. It was about the world-famous Chinese magician Chung Ling-soo. He performed in London every night. The audience went crazy for his magic tricks and flocked to see this oriental man wearing a long robe, a mandarin jacket, and a long braid. But a magician is just someone who knows how to keep secrets. Secrets are the essence of their job. In fact, Chung Ling-soo was not even a Chinese. Role Play discusses various ways of “role-playing”. Through the perspective of the magician Lin Lu-chieh, the production discusses the intriguing connection between Lin himself and the magician Chung Ling-soo. The show straddles on the line between fact and fiction. There are a lot of narratives. The essence of magic is explored with stories. And magic is employed experimentally as a way of storytelling. From the discussion of the fakeness of the society, the show moves gradually towards the discovery of the reality of life—the magic hour. © 翁得雋 2023 FACP Pitch for New Aspects Members' Choice Sponsored by Clair C. & Friends Fellewship “I haven't seen a sincere person with a simple story move people's hearts in a long time .” Founder of Cloud Gate Dance T heater, 林懷民 Lin Hwai-min. Magic Moments in Life by Hsu Jen-hao 30 January 2025 Taishin Arts Nominators' Reviews In recent years, Lin Lu-chieh has utilized magic performances, interspersed with storytelling and role-playing, to narrate stories through magic and reflect on life through performance. Moving beyond the mere "magic tricks" of traditional magicians, he employs metaphors and metonymy to strike at the "magic moments" of life. Breaking free from the conventional magician’s stage framework, he has transformed his craft into a cross-disciplinary solo performance, garnering attention and sparking considerable discussion within critical circles. From "Birthday Party", which reflects on his life’s journey, to "Role Play", which incorporates the 20th century legacy of Chinese magician Chung Ling-soo, Lin has developed a distinctive style. With a minimalist stage and his ability to narrate and perform solo, he extends the possibilities of magic into a performance that prompts contemplation of life, gradually forming a unique artistic signature. 2019 Birthday Party at NTCH Experimental Theater This time, in "Dazed and Confused", co-created with director Lee Chun-cheng. Lin essentially returns to the mode of "Birthday Party" but expands its scale and deepens the breadth of his personal life narrative. He turns his confessional tale of becoming a magician into a philosophical allegory about navigating life through the lens of magic. Lin Lu-chieh opens the performance with a familiar magician’s trope—playing cards—before gently unraveling his journey to becoming a magician. From age 13 to 30, how was this 17-year magical life forged? Lin’s honest confession departs from the typical "never compromise" success narrative. Instead, becoming a "magician" emerges as the result of self-healing after a series of traumas and compromises in his pursuit of meaning. It all begins in a childhood Go (board game) classroom. Amid the familiar routine of teenage study and exams, playing Go became an outlet for a stifled adolescence. Back then, Lin was a standout in the Yilan Go classroom, winning game after game and gaining immense confidence—until one match when his defeated opponent scattered the pieces on the board, pleading for a rematch. Young Lin agreed, only to lose the second game unexpectedly. From that moment, he stopped winning at Go, and the game faded from his life. 2024 Dazed and Confused at Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Photo by Wong De Later, inspired by baseball star Wang Chien-ming’s Major League success, he briefly dreamed of becoming a baseball pitcher. Then, family karaoke sessions sparked a desire to become a singer as captivating as his idol, Taylor Swift. But while dreams were plentiful, reality was harsh. These grand teenage aspirations—like his first glimpse of Taipei 101 after the Hsuehshan Tunnel (main artery between Taipei & Yilan) opened—became towering, unattainable memories. Living in the shadow of an academically gifted older sister and an athletic younger sister, teenage Lin yearned to break free and find a way to stand out. Yet reality, like the scale he stepped on in a department store as a child, allowed him to deceive himself into thinking he fit the standard, but proof always eluded him. Lin candidly lays bare his lackluster youth, interspersing it with a few magic segments: first, a trick involving misaligned color recognition, then a feat of memorizing pi’s digits, where he asks the audience to randomly flip to a page and line, and he flawlessly recites the numbers that follow. Beyond marveling at his magical ingenuity, we glean life lessons about "the seen and unseen" and "randomness versus order." The magic and narrative echo one another, reflecting the dull surface of a "loser’s" life while revealing the surging "magic moments" beneath. The pursuit of life’s highlights ultimately leads Lin to the path of becoming a magician. It all starts with a Rubik’s cube at home, through which he discovers passion, applause, and a way to sustain attention. The colors and suits of a poker deck serve as both eye-catching tricks and mystical units of time: 52 cards in a deck correspond to 52 weeks in a year, with four suits representing the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In repeatedly manipulating the deck, the young magician perceives the passage of time, the cycles of creation and destruction, life and death. The scattered cards on the floor transform into a testament to the cyclical nature of the seasons, and Lin turns magic into a poetic expression of life’s narrative—the most moving moment of the solo performance. 2024 Dazed and Confused at Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Photo by Wong De He then recounts his journey from busking at Park to hourly gigs at department stores. His father’s gray overcoat from the wardrobe becomes the teenage magician’s first costume. Lin seems to gradually emerge from his gray, lackluster life. He tells us that a miracle is the fleeting moment when someone believes, and success hinges on the applause of others. Sustaining that applause is no easy feat—he endures the malicious bullying of high school classmates who "shuffle" his deck with a water hose, the departure of a childhood companion who once walked home with him, and the dazzling ring he conjures from a box, unable to hold onto a heart that could catch his life. He gets into university but leaves everything in Yilan behind, venturing far away to chase his unfinished dreams. Looking back, he earnestly asks, “If everything had been accomplished, would I still have become a magician?” Had he won that Go match, become a pitcher, risen to fame like Taylor Swift, or had someone agreed to catch his life, perhaps Magician Lin Lu-chieh would have made himself disappear today. 2024 Dazed and Confused at Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Photo by Wong De At this point, the dialectic between magic and life crystallizes. The "magic tricks" of magic are the highlights born from a lackluster life’s search for "magic moments." It’s precisely because life is riddled with regrets and unfinished chapters that teenage Lin continues his pursuit of becoming a magician, striving to be the grand magician of his next performance. Thus, the show concludes by returning to the initial Rubik’s cube moment, inviting the audience to witness whether the object pulled from the box magically aligns with the dream he envisioned. "Dazed and Confused" is Lin Lu-chieh’s small-scale solo performance responding to his own life through magic. The magic interludes fulfill his duty as a magician—from familiar poker card tricks to guessing numbers in a flipped book, a levitating table, and conjuring a ring from a box. The magic acts are few but serve as perfect complements to the life narrative. This is Lin looking back on his journey, from a gray teenage past to a performance practice that moves forward until the end, embodying the realization of his own life. The English title, Dazed and Confused, captures both the audience’s emotional reaction to the magic and the performer’s state of reflecting on his life—stunned yet perplexed. The path to self-realization as a magician is filled with surprises and glory, but also setbacks and self-doubt. Yet as long as someone believes, miracles can happen. What "Dazed and Confused" ultimately offers us is the belief in our own lives behind every miracle. 2022 Role Play atat NTCH Experimental Theater Photo by Chang, Chen-chou Compared to "Role Play", this performance lacks historical depth and formal experimentation, but it deepens and broadens the dialectic between magic and life narrative established in "Birthday Party". The one-hour show remains modest in scale, yet the performer’s sincerity is deeply moving. One looks forward to Lin honing his craft further, expanding the humanistic narratives that magic can evoke. The solo performance path he has carved out may, in the future, grow into a stunning new theatrical text.

2023 Kavalan Theater Festival is a concrete manifestation of the initiative of these wandering young theater creators. With the curatorial concept of 'the self-empowerment significance of drama,' various theatrical actions are carried out, including exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and drama camps. Rooted in the core spirit of 'writing a love letter to the hometown,' it demonstrates the ambition to expand theater education in Yilan and the audacity to question society through theatrical actions. Moreover, 'Floating Bus of Orchid City' embodies the collective effort of the wandering creators, presenting an organized and diverse theatrical performance, aiming to bring both themselves and the performing arts back to their hometown to take root." —Reviewing Performing Art Taiwan Full Review 1st Kavalan Theatre festival Team 總策劃 : 拾陸製作 策展人 : 簡韋樵 製作統籌 : 林陸傑 技術統籌 : 沈哲弘 執行製作 : 蘇品瑄 行銷宣傳: 施艿芳 視覺設計 : Rex Hao 演出團隊 : 拾陸製作/ 台灣應用劇場發展中心/ 石頭人製造 指導單位 Advisor : 台積電文教基金會 TSMC Culture Foundation/ 宜蘭縣政府文化局 Yilan Cultural Affairs Bureau 文化部 Ministry of Culture/ 國家文化藝術基金會 National Culture and Arts Foundation Production Company : Lu Production Curator : Jian Joe Line Producer : Lin Lu-chieh Technical Director : 沈哲弘 Production Manager : 蘇品瑄 Marketing Manager : 施艿芳 Graphic Design : Rex Hao Peformance Company : Lu Production/ Centre for Applied Theatre, Taiwan/ Stone Man Manufacture) First stop: Dazed and Confused A story about youth, magic and Yilan. On the rooftop of Taipei Main Station. Look! The shifting shadows. Hear! The hurried footsteps. Behold! The giant clock is gone! © 秦大悲 It happened in the blink of an eye when busy travelers were pacing around Taipei Main Station in 1927. And on the wall, there wrote the name of “Liao Tianding.” Rumor has it that Liao Tianding still lives to this day while people learned of his death for more than a decade. “I saw a slim shadow.” they say. Is it true that the legend is back and ready to take on the neighborhood once again? Such a building is once the embodiment of the most diverse array of entertainment and the purest lust for life of the youth. The upper levels of the building are cramped residential spaces owned by once hopeful investors and small families. However, the building slowly gave way to demise with every scandal and incident, albeit in prime location. Palaces is set in one such building. The plot is composed of ten storylines inspired by “the Five Great Taiwanese Legends of Mysterious Cases”. View Program Book Palaces Website © 臺中國家歌劇院
